Vidzeme Planning Region, in cooperation with the Latvian Rural Forum, carried out surveys of local governments and domestic producers (2021). Their results reveal the overall current situation as regards public procurements of food products and catering services at education, social care and health care institutions subordinated to the local governments of Vidzeme region. It was found that the involvement of domestic producers in provision of catering services is low and the share of local food products in procurements is low. Both parties, namely, local governments and domestic producers, are interested in cooperation, however, there is a range of obstacles to overcome.
Irīna Kulitāne, the economics expert of Vidzeme Planning Region, will present the results of the survey of local governments and domestic producers regarding procurements of locally produced food and catering services by municipal institutions - facts, conclusions, recommendations of authorities and producers.
We will discuss what circumstances and factors should change to ensure that more local products are procured at schools, kindergartens, care centres and other public municipal authorities.
